Reddit just took a huge step toward ending harassment — and users are pissed

On Wednesday, Reddit administrators announced the company had banned five “harassing subreddits” as part of a new initiative to combat abuse on the hugely popular social news site. The most popular banned subreddit by far: r/fatpeoplehate, a group devoted to, well, hating fat people. Users of that group as well as the 5 other disgusting channels were not happy about it.

This whole we have been mocked and didn’t even realize.

oh my gawd…

Shit

afro-textured hair along with big exaggerated painted lips and a big fake red nose. the whole idea of circus clowns stems from racism and the mockery of black men who were slaves at the time

Holy shit

Oh God. Whaaat? And i thought i was woke!?

BRUHHHHHHHHHHH maybe at a certain point they changed from black face paint to white face paint when blackface stopped becoming socially acceptable 😦😧😦😧😦

This is either the greatest realization or the greatest reach of all time

@akon Lighting Africa  #AkonLightingAfrica

Today, 600 million Africans still don’t have access to electricity, particularly in rural areas.

In far too many parts of Africa, night-time economic activities are practically non-existent. Women cannot make productive use of their time to carry out the most basic household tasks. Children who help the women cannot study at night without proper light and complete their homework by candle light, an additional expense for parents. Moreover, without access to electricity, over 3.5 million Africans die every year from harmful pollutants or fires in the home produced by costly and toxic solid fuels.

To meet these challenges, Akon Lighting Africa seeks to provide a concrete response at grass roots level to Africa’s energy crisis and lay the foundations for future development. Launched in February 2014 by international music star, Akon, leader Thione Niang and entrepreneur Samba Bathily, this initiative aims to develop an innovative solar-powered solution that will provide African villages with access to a clean and affordable source of electricity.

photos by lassi rautiainen, susan brookes and staffan widstrand of a rare friendship that developed between a female grey wolf and a male brown bear in northern finland.

notes lassi, “no one can know exactly why or how the young wolf and bear became friends, but i think that perhaps they were both alone when they were young and a bit unsure of how to survive alone. it seems to me that they feel safe being together.”

the photographers also note that the two share every meal together, bringing each other their kills (as seen in the third and fifth photos).

In honour of Steve Irwin. – “Yeah, I’m a thrill seeker, but crikey, education’s the most important thing.”

Stephen Robert "Steve“ Irwin (22 February 1962 – 4 September 2006), nicknamed ”The Crocodile Hunter“.

“If there’s one thing that I, Steve Irwin, would wanna be remembered for, it’s be remembered for passion and enthusiasm. Conservation is my job, my life, my whole persona.

Please help continue Steve’s legacy and find out more about his passion here. [Inspired by this post and this video.]

Steve was one of the biggest inspirations to me as a child and is why animals are my passion. Steve did what I always wanted to do, and now that I’m a wildlife rehabilitator, I know the reason for my love of animals and desire to educate the public on native wildlife is because of him.

Steve is the main reason I love animals so much, especially reptiles. I used to be pretty afraid of them as a kid but I learned from him they’re amazine beautiful creatures and it’s just as easy to love them as you would love a puppy or kitten.

I used to love his tv show as a kid. Can’t believe it’s nearly 9 years since he died

So I have been asked, you know, how do I know that this isn’t just a phase, and I think that that is actually a really great and important question. For me, it’s pretty simple: this is me sitting right here, right now. This is me, and the fact that I’m gay is a part of me. From my earliest memories, I have always been this way. And the part of my life where I was in a prison that was built for me, and then I, at one point, took over the construction of that prison and kept the building going myself – that was the phase. Being in that prison, that was the phase.

The Department of Impossible Cuteness would like to introduce you to Oz, Tails, George, and Ralph, four tiny tortoises. In this adorable video hese compact chelonians are introduced to stacks of equally tiny pancakes for the very first time. Mmm… pancakes.

image

First there is sniffing, careful sniffing. But that doesn’t last long.

image

Then it’s down to business. We’d do exactly the same thing when presented with a stack of pancakes as tall as we are. Om nom nom nom!

image

Except for one of them. One of these incredibly cute little tortoises turns and runs away. Save those pancakes for another day.

Fury Road: when there are enough women

weareallfromearth:

When there are enough women in your cast, not every woman has to represent all women and they can have individual flaws and strengths.

When there are enough women, some can fall apart and others can hold things together.

When there are enough women, you can literally name a character Cheedo The Fragile without making a statement about feminine fragility.

When there are enough women, you know the action movie doesn’t have to preserve the one woman in order to ensure you have one woman left in your cast at the end, so women might die, just like men, and the stakes are high and real and the plot is not predictable.

When there are enough women, you can cast women with different ages and looks and body types based on what makes sense for the story - beautiful women who were selected for beauty by a character who valued women’s bodies more than their whole selves, wiry muscular women of middle and older age, built to survive, mothers who were used for the things that come with their fertility and have the fat to show for it, old fragile women who took care of others while rarely stepping outside, disabled women affected by their environment and experiences.

When there are enough women, the world feels real.

i wish people would stop romanticizing not eating breakfast and not getting enough sleep and being dependent on coffee to function and always being in a bad mood and treating yourself poorly because that behavior is very unhealthy for you

so-treu:

Antiblackness, in a rough-hewn nutshell, is the structuring logic of the modernity and the foundation of the contemporary world we live in.

It is the glue and the string running through our conceptions of what it means to be free, what it means to be a citizen, what it means to be a legitimate and productive member of society, what it means to be Human, and what it means to be the anti-Human. Antiblackness is the structural positioning of the Black (“the Black” here being a marker for a certain type of subjectivity comparable to Marx’s “the worker” – shoutout Frank Wilderson) as an object that is fungible and able to be accumulated like any other wicket churned out by the process of capitalism; it is the fact of Black folks being open to perpetual and gratuitous violence that needs no definitive prior provocation or “reason;” the “reason” is the fact of Blackness (see: getting shot for walking home with some Skittles, getting shot while being handcuffed in the backseat of a car, getting shot for calling 911,being beaten for staring at someone in a “dehumanizing” way,and on and on).

It is, to echo Hartman, the afterlife of slavery: a logic that collapses the past and the present and places violence towards the Black within a range of acceptable daily practices.
